Lichtung

Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy

What is Lichtung?

Lichtung is a brand new journal publishing papers with a relevance in moral sciences and philosophy. We are a student-led journal affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at Ghent University that wants to prove that undergraduate students' work is worth to be shown to the world, rather than to disappear in some dusty drawer.

We at Lichtung believe in the strength and quality of undergraduate work. We strive to be a platform that gives a voice to undergraduate students, first and foremost in philosophy and moral sciences. We want to publish promising bachelor papers and master dissertations and avoid them disappearing in some dusty university drawer, never to be read again.

In "the Origin of the Work of Art", Martin Heidegger wrote the following:

“In the midst of being as a whole an open place occurs. There is a clearing, a lighting. Thought of in reference to what is, to beings, this clearing is in a greater degree than are beings. This open center is therefore not surrounded by what is; rather, the lighting center itself encircles all that is, like the Nothing which we scarcely know. That which is can only be, as a being, if it stands within and stands out within what is lighted in this clearing. Only this clearing grants and guarantees to us humans a passage to those beings that we ourselves are not, and access to the being that we ourselves are.”

— Martin Heidegger, The Origin of the Work of Art

Of course the aim of this undergraduate journal is not to take upon ourselves this task of Heidegger in illuminating Being as the Being of Beings, but rather to give a sense to and retain that serene atmosphere implied in the word "Lichtung"; an open spot in the forest in which, we may hope, the thought of students worth hearing about can stand out and shine forth brightly.

Are you an undergraduate student in philosophy or moral sciences? Send us your papers and be a part of our mission to show the talent of undergraduate students! Not only can you share your work with others in the field, it will also show future students the importance and fun of studying philosophy and moral sciences. All subjects are welcome, but be sure to first check our submission guidelines.

Are you an undergraduate student in some other field that's not moral sciences or philosophy, but you have written a paper with philosophical or ethical value from within your own field? Be sure to submit and maybe your paper will be published too, showing that philosophy and moral sciences have a role to play in many different disciplines throughout the whole university.
